Copilot

By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg

Microsoft's brand for AI-assisted experiences across Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and the Power Platform.

Copilot is Microsoft's umbrella brand for AI-assisted experiences across its product portfolio. In the Dynamics 365 context, "Copilot" appears in several distinct products: Microsoft 365 Copilot (embedded in Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.), Copilot for Sales (a per-user add-on for sellers), and various embedded Copilots inside specific Dynamics 365 apps — Copilot in Business Central, Copilot in Customer Service, Copilot in Finance. Each is a distinct product with separate licensing. Copilot Studio is the platform for building custom AI agents on top of all of these. The licensing landscape is non-trivial; verify per use case which Copilot a user is being offered.

In practice, the safest way to reason about "Copilot" in a Dynamics 365 conversation is to ask which specific product is meant before assuming anything about cost or capability, because the brand name alone tells you nothing about licensing — some Copilot features ship included with a standard app licence (Business Central's, for instance), while others (Copilot for Sales, Copilot Studio agents) are separately licensed products layered on top.

Where confusion shows up: "does Copilot cost extra" has no single correct answer across the family — the honest process is identifying the exact capability a team needs (drafting an email in Sales, versus a custom agent answering partner questions) and checking that specific product's current licensing, rather than assuming a Copilot-branded feature is either always included or always a paid add-on. This shifts as Microsoft ships new Copilot features into different products at different points, so a rule of thumb from a year ago may no longer hold for a newly released capability.
