ISVs

By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg

Independent Software Vendors — partners that build and sell packaged products on top of Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform.

ISV stands for Independent Software Vendor. In the Microsoft business apps ecosystem, ISVs are partners who build and sell packaged productsextensions, add-ons, vertical solutions, country localizations, connectors — that run on top of Dynamics 365 or the Power Platform. ISVs are distinct from implementation partners (sometimes called SIs or VARs), although many partners do both. ISV products are typically distributed through Microsoft AppSource, are licensed separately from the core Dynamics 365 subscription, and may add country compliance, industry-specific functionality (e.g. construction, wholesale, food, manufacturing), or generic utilities like document automation.

In practice, evaluating an ISV add-on before buying it means checking three things beyond feature fit: how many customers actually run it in production (a thin install base is a real risk if the ISV is small), how the vendor handles upgrades when the underlying Dynamics 365 or Business Central platform changes underneath them, and what the support contract actually covers versus what falls back to the implementation partner. A common-business-central-isv-addons style comparison is worth reading before committing budget to a specific vendor's lock-in.

Where confusion arises: buying from an ISV and buying from an implementation partner are different commercial relationships even when the same company happens to do both — an ISV's support contract covers their product, not the surrounding configuration or custom AL a partner built, so a support ticket that touches both sometimes bounces between the two until someone owns the actual root cause. Clarify support boundaries at purchase time, not during the first production incident.
