Can I implement Business Central without a partner?

By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg

Technically yes for a very simple, low-customisation deployment; in practice almost nobody does, because a partner brings implementation methodology, AL development capability, and the ongoing relationship Microsoft's licensing model assumes exists. Self-implementation is realistic only for a tiny, standard-configuration company with an internal Business Central-literate admin.

Business Central's SaaS licence doesn't require a partner contractually, and Microsoft does sell some tiers direct in some markets — but the practical reality is that data migration, chart-of-accounts and dimension design, integrations, and go-live support are specialist work most companies don't have in-house, and a wrong dimension design or a rushed cutover is expensive to unwind later.

Where self-implementation genuinely works is a very small, single-entity company adopting Business Central close to out-of-the-box, with someone internally who already knows the product (often from a previous role) and no significant data migration or integration need.

For anyone past that narrow case, the real question isn't whether to use a partner but which one — see the partner-selection guide for what to interrogate before signing.
