What is the difference between Business Central Essentials and Premium?

By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg

Premium is Essentials plus manufacturing and service management functionality — everything else in the two tiers is otherwise the same. A tenant cannot mix the two across full users: if any full user needs manufacturing or service management, every full user in that environment is licensed at the Premium tier, not just the ones who use those modules.

This 'all full users on the same tier' rule is the part that catches people out during licensing decisions — you can't put ten Essentials users and two Premium users in the same environment to save cost on the majority. If even one workflow genuinely needs manufacturing or service management, the whole full-user population in that environment is priced at Premium.

Team Members licences sit outside this distinction entirely and are unaffected by which of the two tiers the environment's full users are on. The practical decision is usually simple once framed this way: does anyone in this environment need manufacturing or service management functionality, yes or no — there's little value in comparing feature lists beyond that one question.
